Topic: Black women have long faced silencing and erasure in broader society as well as in the Black community in the US.  This erasure of Black women began from the time of their arrival in the US, with the devaluing of their lives under Eurocentric principles of culture, and has been perpetrated in the more recent movement against anti-Blackness.  Nonetheless, Black women have been central to every movement for Black Liberation from enslaved insurrections to Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter.  This webinar will pose some thoughts on how it is that Black women can be central to the workings of these movements but not receive due recognition in them.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Maria Martin is a professor of African History/Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of California Merced and holds a PhD in African American and African Studies with a concentration in history and women’s studies. Her overall research interests include African and African American women’s activism, Intellectual history, Transnational Black feminist theory, Pan-Africanism, 19th-20th century women and gender history. She is Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium alumna and has won four Fulbright awards in addition to receiving an honorable mention from the Ford Foundation for her research.
