CCS Webinar: Statues Must Fall

Topic: Around the world, statues and monuments that have long honored racist figures and racism have started to fall. Five years on from when the RhodesMustFall Black-led student movement shook South African universities out of their non-racial consensus, this webinar reflects on the intense creative disruptions that formed the basis of their work. Known broadly for calling for the fall of the statue of colonialist Cecil John Rhodes from the University of Cape Town main campus, RMF’s work to build Black solidarity and analysis through a grounded intersectional approach to struggle, remains obscured. Rhodes Must Fall was about Rhodes falling, but it was also about the failed democratising project of the ‘new South Africa’.
Speaker Bio: Leigh-Ann Naidoo is an educationalist who works at the University of Cape Town, School of Education. She was raised in an anti-apartheid activist home, surrounded by radicals who taught her the value of critique and radical praxis. She trained as a teacher at the University of the Western Cape and after the international sports boycott was ended, represented South Africa internationally for indoor and beach volleyball, finally competing in the later at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, where she was one of a handful of out, queer Olympians. Since then she has worked both inside and outside of the formal education system. She was involved in #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall struggles and formed part of the 2016 all women international flotilla mission that attempted to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza through a transnational solidarity project. She is interested in knowledge production outside of the confines of the academic project and is working collectively to develop daily pedagogies that confront the violences that are the reality of the majority of people on the planet, to work towards some form of resistance and repair. She continues to be actively involved in reimagining the university as an institution with the potential to radically change society.
