CCS Webinar: #BlackLivesMatter – Igniting A Global Call For Change

In this webinar we will be having a discussion with David Austin about how the #BlackLivesMatter has brought America to a turning point, how this resonates with the American Civil Rights Movement and how #BlackLivesMatter has gained momentum outside of the region. We will also discuss various developments including correcting definitions of racism, reverberating transformation in various sectors such as the corporate sector and what this means for genuine social change.
Speaker Bio:
David Austin is a former community organizer and youth worker based in Montreal. In general, he writes about social movements, socialism, the Caribbean and black radical traditions, and Caribbean and African thought. He is the author of Dread Poetry and Freedom: Linton Kwesi Johnson and the Unfinished Revolution (London: Pluto Press, 2018) and Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security in Sixties Montreal (Toronto: Between the Lines, 2013), winner of the 2014 Casa de las Americas Prize; and author/editor of Moving Against the System: The 1968 Congress of Black Writers and the Making of Global Consciousness (London: Pluto Press, 2018); and editor of You Don’t Play with Revolution: The Montreal Lectures of C.L.R. James (AK Press, 2009). He has also produced radio documentaries for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on C.L.R. James (The Black Jacobin, 2005) and Frantz Fanon (The Wretched of the Earth, 2007). He currently teaches in the Humanities, Philosophy and Religion Department at John Abbott College.
